Pipe Tune: Lament for the Lone Piper

No. 6 The Lament for the Lone Piper in A
No. 6 The Lament for the Lone Piper in D
Dots in A
Dots in D

Hello!
Here is the next smallpiper podcast tune! I hope that it's ok! I was really chuffed with the reaction of the ensemble of the last tune so I thought I'd try it again. I wrote this tune a few years ago and wrote a part for string quartet. I thought it would be nice to record those parts, however, it might have seemed like a good idea at the time, it was really hard to do. I'm not really sure that I should put up this tune, but I did do it and I don't think I could face re-doing the parts again, so here it is anyway! Please be gentle with me! I think I need to dust of the bass a bit more and practise the parts a bit instead of just sightreading it straight away. Doh! The transfer to D worked by the skin of it's teeth, it's kind of ok. Sigh. I think I was too tired really and should have left it until after the weekend, but it's ok! I also wanted to try to record a tune that is from our new album (not released yet, but pretty close). It's hard to do some of our tunes because I have three extra notes to most pipes, so I have to avoid those tunes, which is most of them! I think though I'll arrange some so that they can be played and then cast them!

I mention in the podcast about the festival podcast that I'm going to make at the weekend. There's a link on the side of this podcast leading to it, it'll show up when I've posted the cast, hopefully early next week.

Thanks again for listening and reading all of this waffle!

Hi Vickie!
Very nice tune. Very beautiful.
I did learn this one a while ago on your research site. But hadn't played it in a very long time. I must say the Podcast worked great.
I think you have the format down perfectly. I learned the tune.
And I got a very big kick from playing with your accompaniment on the double bass and flute. I thought the bass was brilliant.
Infact I played along on my brand new border pipes in A. Lament for the Lone Piper sounds very nice on them.......
I look forward to the Miskin podcast and whatever comes next!!!!

Cheers from Washington DC

Hello!
Thank you so much! We've just returned from Miskin and I have the festival podcast all ready to put up, but for some reason blogger seems to be down (well, down-ish as I can post this comment, just not a new entry). Hopefully it'll be up by the end of the day! Then I need to do some more writing of tunes!
:)

Vicki, all I can say is thank you! My ears are happy. I have set up finally my mac to get all the pod casts downloaded. Technology is great. I'm enjoying the festival on my Ipod now.

Will report more later.

Vicki, I have the HM chanters in A/D with three keys... Please...send some tunes out that have the naturals in them. Folks who don't have keys could tape their C or F down a half step if they wanted to play the tune. Its really nice to break away from the "its only got nine notes.." mentality.

From a learning perspective, the podcasts are great. Once set up for auto download, it is sweat to pull the tunes to the Apple Shuttle or Ipod and listen to them on the go. (At present while I remodel my house pounding nails.)

I find the Podcast tool better for this flexiblity than just a web site and having to be at the computer to learn. An interesting aspect to this learning method is the need for the individual to plug their MP3 player/computer into a set of speakers loud enough to hear properly while playing their pipes.

I have found the set up you're using with a voice mic to be very high quality sound. The overall quality makes the learning experience seem more "real" as if you are sitting down to learn the tune with someone playing with you.

As for a video link in the learning tool - The visual body movements (toes, fingers, conducting) could aid in the timing issue if there was video. I think the sync timing is not really there for internet video. The new Apple Tiger Software and Broadband / DSL might work okay for live feed lessons or sessions. I believe that there will be an market for this learning soon developing. I see this developing on line market that would allow folks to subscribe to tune learning by various artists / teachers. While once downloaded the file would be like a CD and could potentially be pirated w/o the artist getting any compensation.

Have to run.. just wanted to say how much I appreciate your willingness to share your music.

Thanks
